WOOD SCULPTURE

The natural warmth and beauty of wood have always been its salient features, but from a sculptural point of view its mechanical properties are just as important. Its fibrous nature and great tensile strength allows sculptures to be carved thinner, finer and more precisely than stone sculpture. Carved out of the solid block, or individual pieces joined together allowing greater freedom of design in the creation of large pieces of sculpture. Working by hand with carving gouges and a mallet is the preferred method, rather than the brutal approach of chain saws and grinders, respecting and working in harmony with the wood as opposed to domination and control, allows for very human, and sensitive sculpture.
