......and is a constant source of inspiration to Gareth, the founder of Northern Ignorance. Chaotic, wild, mysterious and perfectly balanced, the inexorable forces of nature are available to all, but unfortunately ignored by most, to the detriment of 21st century artistic development.
Located on a farm in the Peak District National Park, Cheshire, England, UK in the bottom of a valley surrounded by woodland, streams, rock crags and rolling green hills, the landscape itself looking like an enormous sculpture, is the perfect location to be inspired on a daily basis.

Gareth believes attention to detail is paramount, going the extra mile, breaking the rules, putting everything into a piece, along with a deep emotional involvement ensures work of great realism with a highly personal feel. The world over he is considered a specialist sculptor in the carving of hands in Carrara Marble, something avoided by many sculptors because of the profound difficulties involved in the realistic sculpture of the hands out of the solid block. Another area of specialism is the fusion of sculpture and furniture known as functional sculpture or art furniture, the designs being absolutely new and original and without historical precedent. The use of beautiful materials adds to the drama and natural feel of each piece of sculpture, English Walnut, Fiddle Back Sycamore, Swiss Pear and Cedar of Lebanon are used in the Functional Sculpture/Art Furniture along with English Oak for Wood Sculpture, not forgetting Bianco Carrara Marble the most perfect sculpture material in the world.

Creating sculpture in Marble, Stone or Wood is extremely demanding, much more so than bronze.Working by hand from the solid, especially in Carrara Marble is the most time consuming and unforgiving of the fine arts, but the effort shows and its worth the time.

Gareths work is in great demand and is held in private collections throughout the world. Visits to the farm can be arranged to personally view the Marble, Limestone, and Wood sculptures, this being the best way to appreciate the detail and intensity of the work. Certain sculptures are for sale and bespoke sculpture commissions can be discussed. Sculpture commissions undertaken throughout the UK and worldwide.

The Man In The Mirror

If you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say

For it isn't a man's father, mother or wife
Whose judgement upon him must pass
The fellow whose verdict counts most in his life
Is the man staring back from the glass

He's the fellow to please, never mind the rest
For he's with you clear up to the end
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass

-- A convict; found on the walls of his cell
